The first season of the American superhero television series Iron Man, which is based on the Marvel Comics character Tony Stark / Iron Man, premiered on The CW and Netflix on October 16, 2023, and ran for 15 episodes until June 8, 2023. The season follows Tony Stark on his road of becoming the suited hero persona "Iron Man". The season is produced by Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Entertainment, alongside Marvel Studios, with Freddie Goodwin serving as showrunner.

Iron Man is the first season of the American television series based on the Marvel Comics character Tony Stark / Iron Man, developed by Jackson Greene for HBO Max as the foundation of a new standalone live-action Marvel universe produced independently from any prior film continuity. The season premiered on March 12, 2026, and concluded on August 20, 2026, consisting of 23 episodes.
The season was ordered in 2021. Filming began in June 2021 and concluded in April 2022. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony, with principal cast members being Gwyneth Paltrow as Jenny Stark, Nick Creegan as Noah Mad, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. Dougray Scott appears as Mark Singh alongside Ben Lewis as Fletcher Markus.

The series follows Tony Stark as he rebuilds his company, confronts government distrust, battles rival weapons manufacturers, and encounters an emerging wave of technologically enhanced criminals. Unlike previous adaptations, this version of Iron Man exists in a separate continuity with no connection to any film universe.

Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Jacob Tremblay, Sam Rockwell, Rila Fukushima, and Lance Reddick. The season uses a traditional serialized format, balancing episodic threats with long-form storytelling.

The show was renewed for a second season in August 2026.

| ShortSummary = Ex-military engineer Marcus Thane ambushes a covert convoy in the Gobi Desert and steals the ARC-LINK neural core, an abandoned Stark Industries prototype meant for direct brain–armor interfacing. Tony Stark, now refining early iterations of the Mark I-X exosuit, learns that the tech used in the attack matches his scrapped “Mark Zero” schematics and begins investigating who resurrected the project. Thane publicly resurfaces in Midvale, testing an upgraded, weaponized version of the ARC-LINK suit and overpowering Stark in their first encounter, forcing Tony to retreat as federal agents swarm the scene. Pepper Potts and James Rhodes confront Stark about the resurfacing tech, prompting Tony to commit to building a stronger, fully realized armor before Thane escalates further. Meanwhile, Thane delivers the stolen ARC-LINK to an underground bunker, where an unidentified partner overseeing a larger operation welcomes him to “Phase Two,” signaling the beginning of a new engineered arms race built from Stark’s own abandoned ideas.

| ShortSummary       = Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and lead weapons designer for Stark Industries, is critically injured and captured during an ambush on a U.S. military convoy in Afghanistan, where insurgents are revealed to be using advanced weapons manufactured by his company. Awakening in captivity with shrapnel lodged near his heart, Stark is kept alive by a crude electromagnetic device built by fellow prisoner Yinsen, who explains that their captors will kill them unless Stark constructs a missile. Confronted with the consequences of his weapons firsthand, Stark covertly designs a powered suit of armor from salvaged materials while feigning cooperation. As the insurgents lose patience, Stark completes the improvised armor and uses it to escape, destroying the weapons cache and collapsing the cave, though Yinsen sacrifices himself to ensure Stark’s survival. Recovered by U.S. forces, Stark returns to the United States physically weakened but deeply altered by the experience. In Malibu City, he publicly announces that Stark Industries will cease all weapons manufacturing, shocking investors and government officials and triggering internal opposition within the company while drawing quiet scrutiny from local authorities. Retreating into his private workshop, Stark refines the crude armor into an advanced system powered by a miniaturized arc reactor, achieving controlled flight after several near-fatal failures. As his work attracts the attention of rival industrialist Justin Hammer, Stark completes a red-and-gold armored suit and openly takes flight over Malibu, marking his emergence as Iron Man.

| ShortSummary = After a masked intruder infiltrates Stark Industries’ data core, wipes part of JARVIS’s memory, and leaves a warning that Tony “left a door open,” Tony begins hunting a new threat unrelated to Thane and learns from an underground tech broker that a mysterious data thief known as the Circuit Ghost has been targeting advanced neural systems across the globe. When the Ghost returns to breach a secure vault, Tony attempts to trap them but is overwhelmed by phase-shifted technology built from his own abandoned ARC-LINK prototypes, forcing him to confront the fact that someone is weaponizing ideas he buried years ago. Teaming up with Rhodey and Pepper, Tony realizes the Ghost’s tech perfectly complements Thane’s stolen ARC-LINK core, proving two separate enemies are racing toward the same catastrophic breakthrough, and although Tony briefly destabilizes the Ghost’s cloaking long enough to see they’re a young woman, she escapes before he can identify her. Meanwhile, the Ghost—secretly Kira, a brilliant engineer believed dead—reports to an unknown handler who insists Stark must be stopped before he repeats the mistakes of his past, while Thane prepares his enhanced suit for the next phase of his own escalating plan.

| ShortSummary       = Public attention intensifies after Tony is seen operating as Iron Man over Malibu, prompting widespread speculation and quiet concern from authorities. As Stark Industries works to contain the fallout, the Malibu City Police Department opens an internal inquiry into unexplained aerial activity, with Lucas Mercer growing increasingly suspicious of Tony’s involvement. Tony continues refining the armor in isolation, strengthening its durability, power efficiency, and defensive systems while dismissing Pepper’s concerns about his escalating recklessness. He learns that Stark-manufactured weapons are still appearing in unauthorized conflict zones, indicating that halting production has not ended their circulation. Meanwhile, Justin Hammer accelerates a covert armored weapons program using incomplete Stark data, prioritizing obedience and firepower over operator safety. When Tony intervenes to disable an armed convoy without civilian casualties, the act marks his first deliberate use of the armor to stop an external threat rather than to escape danger, but footage of the encounter spreads publicly. As police scrutiny tightens and Hammer authorizes live testing of his own prototype, Tony accepts that secrecy is no longer possible and that his actions have begun to reshape global power dynamics.

| ShortSummary = After a break-in at Hammer Industries exposes that a masked saboteur known as the Ghost stole the unstable Razorback rail-gauntlet, Tony investigates and concludes the thief is assembling a toolkit specifically designed to bypass his own neural vault protections, forcing him, Pepper, and Rhodey to confront the possibility that someone is weaponizing every dangerous idea Tony buried years earlier. Kira, revealed to be the Ghost and barely held together by malfunctioning phase-tech, races to finish mapping the vault while her failing body hints at a catastrophic price for her abilities, and Tony tracks her trail into the old Midtown power tunnels, where he discovers she’s not stealing for profit but trying to secure a truth tied to his scrapped Mark Zero work. Their confrontation is interrupted when Thane violently intervenes to silence her, using an overclocked ARC-LINK-powered suit that nearly kills them both before Tony drives him off and rescues Kira, learning she’s been manipulated by a hidden partner orchestrating an arms race built from Stark’s discarded inventions. As Kira collapses from phase decay and warns that “Phase Three” is coming, an unidentified figure in a remote bunker studies surveillance footage of Tony carrying her to safety, declaring that once Thane retrieves the final component, Stark’s entire legacy will be reduced to ash.

Development
HBO Max ordered Iron Man in early 2025 as the flagship series of a new, standalone live-action Marvel television universe with no narrative connection to any previous films. Jackson Greene served as showrunner and executive producer.
Discussions for the series began in 2014 with Freddie Goodwin approaching Kevin Feige with a idea for the series and begin development in 2015 to have the series release in a standalone universe in 2017. However, Feige didn't like the idea of the story. In 2019, Goodwin rewrote the season with a focus on action and comic-accuracy with adapting multiple storylines from multiple different comic stories. He again talked with Feige, who liked the new story stating it was a "massive improvement that is different from the MCU". Goodwin gained rights to release the series which was planned to be on The CW. In September 2020, Netflix had made a deal to have the series release on Netflix too.

Writing
The writers’ room structured the season in a classic 2010s network-style serialized format. The main story arc centers on Tony’s rebuilding of Stark Industries, Justin Hammer’s escalating paramilitary ambitions, and the emergence of the villain Ghost.

Filming
Production took place from July 2025 to March 2026 in Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Tokyo.

Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and lead weapons designer for Stark Industries, is critically injured and captured during an ambush on a U.S. military convoy in Afghanistan, where insurgents are revealed to be using advanced weapons manufactured by his company.

Public attention intensifies after Tony is seen operating as Iron Man over Malibu, prompting widespread speculation and quiet concern from authorities.

He expresses confidence in its improved fit and functionality, and Jenny encourages him to proceed with its construction. Meanwhile, at Stark Industries, Jenny instructs the staff to audit recent stock levels. The narrative then shifts to the emerging threat of Fletcher and Alice, the criminal lords who have arrived in the city. They confront Iron Man, damaging his suit and nearly uncovering his identity. The arrival of the police forces both the villains and Iron Man to retreat. In the aftermath, Tony urgently begins crafting the new suit, repurposing parts from the damaged one. Back at the office, Jenny and an increasingly dedicated Justin Hammer continue their successful collaboration. Fletcher and Alice are in cahoots with Police Chief Mark Singh, collaborating to bring down Iron Man.

Back at Stark Industries, Jenny and Justin collaborate closely, unraveling the long-standing mystery of the company's gradual financial decline. Tony delves into research on the enigmatic 'Masher,' but his efforts yield no results online. His investigation takes an alarming turn when his computer is abruptly hacked by an unknown assailant, flashing the cryptic message "One You Fear!" before going dark. Concerned, Tony informs Jenny of this ominous intrusion. Meanwhile, Jenny, deeply engaged in her work with Justin at Stark Industries, awaits Tony's arrival. Elsewhere, Police Chief Singh discusses the fabricated Masher narrative with Alice and Fletcher. Alice assures him that their deception has successfully misled Iron Man. Back at Stark Industries, Jenny shares with Tony a concerning warning issued by Mark Singh against their company. In another development, a heated argument erupts between Alice and Fletcher, escalating into a physical confrontation before they reach a mutual agreement. After deliberating with Jenny, Tony agrees to assist Thor and departs for Asgard City, receiving well-wishes from Jenny and Noah. In Asgard, Tony and Thor strategize to subdue the cunning villain, Loki. Despite their efforts, they are unable to confine Loki within the secure confines of Thor's residence. This failure prompts Odin, Thor's father, to issue a stern directive to eliminate Loki. However, Tony stands firm on his moral principles, adamantly refusing to take a life, even in the face of such a grave threat. This decision highlights a conflict between Tony's unwavering ethical stance and the harsh demands of Asgardian justice, setting the stage for further tension and complexity in their mission against Loki.
