Writer/director [[wikipedia:James_Gunn|James Gunn]] and producer [[wikipedia:Peter_Safran|Peter Safran]] were announced as the co-chairs and co-CEOs of the newly formed [[wikipedia:DC_Studios|DC Studios]] at the end of October 2022. A week after starting their new roles, the pair had begun working with a group of writers to develop an eight-to-ten-year plan for a new [[wikipedia:DC_Universe_(franchise)|DC Universe]] (DCU). Around that time, director [[wikipedia:James_Mangold|James Mangold]] contacted Gunn and Safran to see if there was room for a new [[wikipedia:Swamp_Thing|Swamp Thing]] film in their DCU plan. Batman: Shadows of Gotham is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Bruce Wayne/Batman. Produced by Mob Productions and DC Studios, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be a film in the Goodwin's Universe (GWU). The film is being directed by Alex Brow who also wrote the screenplay. Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Goodwin announced a film based on Batman in June 2023. In August 2024, it was announced that Brow would direct and write the film. Brow commented that he has multiple ideas for the film and stated it will be really dark and hoped it'd be given a R18+ rating.

Work on a Batman film was set to begin early on in the Goodwin's Universe (GWU) as Freddie Goodwin was asked by Mob Productions to have Batman be introduced early on in the universe. By June 2023, it was confirmed that the film had been either cancelled or delayed. Goodwin said the film is looking at a potential 2026 release. In March 2025, it was announced that the film might be released in 2026 but could also face a delay into 2027.

Principal photography is set to begin on March 10, 2025, at Pinewood Studios in London, under the working title The Darkness Rises. The film will be shot for IMAX. Filming is set to conclude in mid–2025.
