Plot

Thirty-five years ago, Ra’s al Ghul and his daughter Talia engineered the conception of a genetically enhanced heir using the DNA of Bruce Wayne, whom Talia drugged during a temporary alliance in Gotham. Raised in secret by the League of Shadows, Damian Wayne was trained from infancy to be the deadliest assassin alive. At age 14, after failing to carry out a hit on a Green Lantern envoy and questioning his mother’s motives, Damian defies the League and escapes, setting in motion a chain of events that will force his father to confront the past he thought he left behind.

Now operating as Batman for over a decade, Bruce Wayne works alone, his allies scattered after years of violence and personal loss. When a masked assassin leaves behind the symbol of the League following the murder of a U.S. Senator in Gotham, Bruce investigates, uncovering security footage of the killer—Damian. Tracking him to a blood-soaked warehouse, Batman confronts the boy, only to learn the truth: Talia has staged a coup within the League, exiling Ra’s al Ghul and initiating "Project Lazarus Rising"—a global plan to destabilize governments through metahuman assassinations. With no one else to trust, Bruce reluctantly brings Damian into the Batcave, beginning a tense and volatile partnership.

Meanwhile, Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern dispatched to Earth after the Jarhanpur crisis, uncovers traces of Phantom Zone radiation tied to a secret A.R.G.U.S. recovery site. As Batman investigates Talia’s movements in Gotham’s underworld, Jordan warns him that remnants of Kryptonian tech have been stolen and sold to factions connected to a rogue metahuman collective operating under the name "The Authority". The group, led by Jenny Sparks and Apollo, has begun eliminating world leaders and metahuman “destabilizers” they view as threats to Earth’s survival.

After Damian injures a suspect during a stakeout, Bruce takes him to visit Alfred Pennyworth, now retired and estranged, for guidance. Tension erupts when Damian reveals his full upbringing—he was never told who his father was until age ten, and he believes Bruce abandoned him. At the same time, Ra’s al Ghul resurfaces, seeking Bruce’s help to stop Talia, whom he admits has unlocked forbidden Lazarus technology capable of mass resurrection. Talia plans to unleash it via a Kryptonian power source—retrieved from the Phantom Zone.

When Sparks and Apollo intercept the Lazarus convoy in Badhnisia, Hal Jordan joins forces with them to stop the cargo from reaching Gotham. Meanwhile, Bruce and Damian infiltrate a League stronghold and learn that the Lazarus serum has mutated, merging with Phantom Zone energy to form a self-sustaining field. Talia plans to activate it beneath Gotham, turning the city into a resurrection crucible that will make her the immortal queen of a new world order. As the field begins to destabilize, criminals long thought dead begin to reappear—including former assassins, warlords, and Bruce’s old enemies.

In the final battle, the Bat-Family reunites as Nightwing and Batgirl arrive to aid Bruce and Damian. Hal Jordan creates a containment barrier while the Authority battles Talia's acolytes. Damian defeats his mother in single combat, refusing to kill her. Bruce disables the core reactor powering the field with help from Ra’s al Ghul, who sacrifices himself by absorbing the final Lazarus surge.

In the aftermath, Bruce formally welcomes Damian as his partner. Gotham slowly recovers, and the Bat-Signal once again shines over the skyline. Jenny Sparks and Hal Jordan agree to stay on Earth for now, uneasy allies in an increasingly unstable world. Damian visits Alfred alone, receiving from him a final lesson: "you can be the sword—but never forget your heart."

In a post-credits scene, within a dimly lit hangar, Amanda Waller approaches Batman and Damian as they monitor the last remnants of the Lazarus field. She places a small black case on the table and opens it—inside is a glowing Kryptonian containment shard recovered from the Phantom Zone breach in Metropolis. “This tech doesn’t belong to Superman anymore,” she says. “And we’re going to need your help to understand what’s still inside it.” Bruce looks at the crystal, then at Damian. “We don’t work for you,” he says. Waller smirks. “You will... when you see what’s coming.”

Cast

  • Luke Evans as Bruce Wayne / Batman: A reclusive billionaire, philanthropist, and the vigilante protector of Gotham City. Now a seasoned hero operating largely in isolation, Bruce is forced to confront the consequences of his past when he learns he has a son. As Batman, he grapples with his legacy and the challenge of mentoring a violent, estranged child raised by the League of Shadows. This version of Bruce is older, more tactical, and emotionally guarded—closer to the mentor figure from the comics’ later arcs.
  • Roman Griffin Davis as Damian Wayne / Robin: The 14-year-old son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, raised from birth by the League of Shadows to be an elite assassin. Damian is highly intelligent, deadly in combat, and fiercely proud, but struggles with emotional connection and moral ambiguity. His arrival in Gotham challenges Batman’s solitary worldview and forces both father and son to forge an uneasy alliance as they confront Talia’s uprising.
  • Golshifteh Farahani as Talia al Ghul: The daughter of Ra’s al Ghul and leader of a splintered League of Shadows. Talia is a brilliant strategist and dangerous combatant who seeks to rebuild the world in her vision through Lazarus-based resurrection technology. Her bond with Damian is both genuine and manipulative—she views him as the heir to a legacy of global control, even if it means sacrificing his free will.
  • Faran Tahir as Ra’s al Ghul: The former head of the League of Shadows, deposed by his daughter Talia after refusing to sanction her use of forbidden Lazarus enhancements. A centuries-old tactician, Ra’s returns to warn Bruce and Damian of the coming cataclysm, allying with his former enemy in a final attempt to preserve the balance he once believed in.
  • Charles Dance as Alfred Pennyworth: Bruce Wayne’s former butler, guardian, and moral compass. Now retired and living in seclusion following years of loss, Alfred is reluctantly pulled back into Bruce’s world when Damian appears. He provides critical guidance to both father and son, helping them confront the emotional scars left by their respective upbringings.
  • Callum Turner as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern: A former U.S. Air Force pilot turned intergalactic peacekeeper. As a Green Lantern assigned to Earth following the Jarhanpur conflict, Hal investigates Phantom Zone energy leaking from black market tech sales. Charismatic but principled, Hal becomes a reluctant ally to Batman and plays a key role in containing the Lazarus field spreading across Gotham.
  • Jesse Plemons as Jenny Sparks: A member of The Authority, an independent metahuman collective operating beyond traditional governments. Jenny is cynical, electrified in power and personality, and believes in harsh pragmatism to maintain Earth’s survival. Her alliance with Batman and Green Lantern is uneasy at best, as her team’s methods blur the line between heroism and extremism.
  • Sam Reid as Apollo: A powerful solar-based metahuman and Jenny Sparks’ partner in The Authority. Modeled as a dark mirror to Superman, Apollo is capable of flight, super strength, and energy projection. His presence in Gotham brings tension, particularly as his authoritarian tendencies clash with Batman’s code—and Damian’s violent instincts.

Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller, Cailee Spaeny appears as Cassandra Cain / Batgirl, and Dacre Montgomery appears as Dick Grayson / Nightwing.

Production

Development

In January 2025, DC Studios co-head Freddie Goodwin announced The Brave and the Bold as the second film in the new DC Cinematic Universe, following Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow. The film was based on Grant Morrison's comic run and intended to introduce Bruce Wayne’s son Damian Wayne into the continuity. Mattson Tomlin, who had previously worked on Batman-related projects, was announced in February as both writer and director.

Tomlin described the story as "a grounded psychological tale about legacy, violence, and identity, told on a mythic scale." The decision to incorporate characters from The Authority and the Green Lantern Corps was made early in development to further unify the cosmic and political dimensions of the shared universe.

Pre-production

Pre-production began in summer 2025. Early storyboards and concept art teased a gothic, neo-noir take on Gotham, as well as action sequences involving the Bat-Family and Lantern Corps. Casting was finalized by September 2025, with Luke Evans announced as Batman and Roman Griffin Davis as Damian Wayne. Callum Turner was cast as Hal Jordan to join Aldis Hodge’s John Stewart from the previous film, indicating the expansion of the Lantern mythos.

Filming

Principal photography began in December 2025 and continued through August 2026. Filming took place primarily in Chicago (standing in for Gotham City), Glasgow, and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Lorne Balfe composed the film’s original score.

Marketing

A teaser poster was revealed at DC FanDome 2025, featuring a shattered Batarang overlaid with a League of Shadows insignia. Warner Bros. debuted the film's first teaser trailer at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, showcasing Batman and Robin in combat with Authority operatives. A full trailer is expected in early 2027.

Release

The Brave and the Bold is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on April 24, 2027. It will be the second entry in the DC Cinematic Universe and part of Chapter One: Crisis.
