Candy Crush War Saga is a free-to-play tile-matching video game released by SOI Studios on April 10, 2023 on Facebook, iOS, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Android. It is intended to be a complete reboot of the Candy Crush games franchise.
In the game, players complete levels by swapping colored pieces of candy on a game board to make a match of three or more of the same color, eliminating those candies from the board and replacing them with new ones, which could potentially create further matches. Matches of four or more candies create unique candies that act as power-ups with larger board-clearing abilities. Boards have various goals that must be completed within a fixed number of moves, such as collecting a specific number of a type of candy or attacking enemy "bases".
The game uses the Battle Pass formula that features seasonal updates. Seasons last a set period of time whilst new levels are added once a week; while it can be played completely through without spending money, players can buy special actions to help clear more difficult boards, from which SOI Studios makes its revenues—at its peak, the company was reportedly earning almost $1 million per day. Around 2024, over 93 million people were playing Candy Crush War Saga, while revenue over a three-month period as reported by Mob Productions was over $829 million. Five years after its release on mobile, the Candy Crush War Saga has received over 4.2 billion downloads, and the game has been one of the highest-grossing and most-played mobile apps in that time frame. As of September 2023, it had reached over $20 billion in revenue.
SOI Studios has since released three related titles — which all are released inside the one application — Candy Crush Space Saga, Candy Crush Galaxy Saga and Candy Crush Super Saga — and every of the company's other mobile titles follow the same Saga freemium format.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Candy Crush War Saga is a "match three" game, where the core gameplay is based on swapping two adjacent candies among several on the gameboard to make a row or column of at least three matching-colored candies. On this match, the matched candies are removed from the board, and candies above them fall into the empty spaces, with new candies appearing from the top of the board. This may create a new matched set of candies, which is automatically cleared in the same manner. The player scores points for these matches and gains progressively more points for chain reactions (called cascades). Additionally, creating matches of four or more candies will create a special candy that, when matched, can clear a row, column, or other section of the board.
The game is split into many levels, which must be completed in sequence. Each level poses a different challenge to the user, such as removing jelly on tiles or clearing candies in a fixed number of moves to bring special ingredients to the bottom of the board. Boards have a number of different configurations and may include special spaces that have their own unique rules, such as spaces covered with jelly that must be cleared by making a match on that space. If the player meets the level's goal, they will be given stars based on their score and can proceed onto the next level. Otherwise, they will lose one life and must try again. If the player runs out of lives, they have to wait for some period of real-world time while their lives regenerate before attempting the level again. Completed levels can be replayed if desired.
Candy Crush War Saga features a fully cinematic Story Mode where gameplay is driven entirely by animated cutscenes, dialogue choices, and branching narrative paths. Instead of traditional match-three mechanics, players progress through a series of story episodes, each unfolding major events in the war for control of the Candy Kingdom. Every episode includes voice-acted scenes, interactive prompts, and timed decisions that influence character relationships, alliances, and the direction of the campaign.
The Story Mode is structured into chapters, each containing multiple episodes that unlock sequentially as players complete key objectives or make specific choices. Some scenes offer alternate outcomes based on prior decisions, allowing for replayability and unique story paths. Players earn rewards for completing episodes, which can unlock cosmetics, lore entries, or exclusive cutscene variants. This mode is entirely separate from gameplay-focused modes, designed for players who want a rich, narrative-driven experience within the Candy Crush universe. New storylines were added during post-launch as entire experiences.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The War of the Sweetened Crown (2023)[edit | edit source]
In the early 1900s, King Orloth Garnith became interested in taking full control over his kingdom, dubbed Candy Kingdom, due to its unique design. Unlike other realms, Candy Kingdom was divided into five flavorful provinces—Caramel Cove, Peppermint Peaks, Gummy Grove, Licorice Lagoon, and the Sourstone Wastes—each ruled independently by noble houses sworn to peace through sugar trade and mutual treaties. Obsessed with uniting the kingdom under a single banner, Orloth believed the divided regions were holding back Candy Kingdom’s true potential. He began militarizing his royal army—the Jawbreakers—an elite force trained in sugar combat and confectionery warfare. Publicly, Orloth claimed he sought unity for trade and harmony. Privately, he drafted "The Sweet Conquest Decree," authorizing the use of force to annex the provinces under royal control.
Tensions boiled when Licorice Lagoon, known for its bitter exports and militant resistance, refused to pay the King's new sugar tax. In retaliation, the Jawbreakers stormed the lagoon, melting bridges with Molten Fudge Cannons and burning licorice root farms. The attack was swift and brutal—marking the first battle of what would be called "The War of the Sweetened Crown". As neighboring provinces watched in horror, Lady Mirabel of Peppermint Peaks called an emergency Sweet Summit. She proposed the formation of a resistance alliance: the Candy Coalition. Composed of warriors, sorcerers, and even sugarcrafters from the affected provinces, the Coalition vowed to stop Orloth’s campaign and protect the freedom of flavor.
Among them rose a young strategist named Cray Tafflyn, an orphan raised in the Sourstone Wastes who once served as a candy miner. With a mind as sharp as peppermint shards, Cray was quickly named commander of the Coalition’s defense efforts. His first mission: protect the Gummy Grove from an advancing Jawbreaker battalion and recover the ancient relic known as the Gumball Core, believed to possess the power to bind—or break—the very essence of candy magic.
As the Jawbreaker battalion closed in on Gummy Grove, Cray and his team of mismatched defenders—marshmallow slingers, syrup alchemists, and caramel-armor knights—prepared a desperate stand at the grove’s edge. Ancient gumdrop sentries, dormant for centuries, were reactivated by Cray’s tinkering, their cores pulsing with forgotten magic. Under moonlight and candy fog, the battle raged. The Jawbreakers’ precision and firepower threatened to overwhelm the grove’s defenders, but Cray’s tactics turned the forest itself into a weapon—booby-trapping gummy trees with sticky sap bombs and luring enemies into licorice vines that snapped shut like jaws.
In the heart of the grove, beneath the Sugarroot Temple, Cray discovered the Gumball Core—a swirling orb of vibrant candy essence suspended in a glassy casing. As he reached for it, a vision surged through him: glimpses of a future where the kingdom was either united in peace or reduced to syrup-soaked ruins. But before he could secure it, a colossal Jawbreaker champion named General Clasp approached, wielding a Candyflame Halberd and flanked by fire-coated troops. With no choice but to protect the Core, Cray challenged him in single combat, his strategy against brute force.
Though wounded, Cray exploited the terrain—drenching the area in slick taffy, causing Clasp to slip, giving just enough time to unleash a sugar-charged burst from the Core, repelling the enemy and saving the grove. The victory sent a message: Orloth's conquest would not go unopposed. But as Cray recovered and the Coalition celebrated, an ominous truth emerged—King Orloth had opened forbidden vaults beneath the Candy Castle, awakening confections long lost to time. The war had only begun, and the sweetest secrets had yet to surface.
Shadows of the Sugar Vault (2024)[edit | edit source]
Following the defense of Gummy Grove, Cray departed from the Coalition’s forward camp after receiving intelligence suggesting increased seismic activity beneath the Candy Castle. These tremors coincided with the unsealing of the Sugar Vaults by King Orloth Garnith, a forbidden chamber believed to house long-dormant relics from the earliest era of the kingdom’s history. Fearing the reawakening of arcane confectionery forces, Cray set out alone to investigate reports of magical disturbances across the outer provinces.
Cray’s destination was Nougat Hollow, a former mining settlement located in the fractured lands between the Sourstone Wastes and the southern ridge. The region had been abandoned following the Great Sugarquake of 1851, which left it structurally unstable and largely inaccessible. Nougat Hollow was historically home to a number of outlaw sugarcrafters and experimental confection alchemists. Among them was Rivella Duskbite, a former ally of Cray’s who vanished following an incident involving volatile sugarglass experimentation.
Upon arrival at the outskirts of the hollow, Cray encountered signs of recent habitation and evidence of advanced sugarcraft engineering, including active defenses made from hardened syrup lattice and crystallized peppermint constructs. Surveillance indicators confirmed that Rivella had survived and had established a concealed workshop deep within the gorge. Cray’s purpose was to request her assistance in understanding the Vault’s construction, origin, and the potential re-emergence of classified confection entities, referred to in historical scrolls as the Vaultborn.
Initial scans conducted in the region suggested a surge in ambient sugar magic and corrupted flavor auras emanating from beneath the capital. These findings aligned with suppressed royal documents previously intercepted by the Coalition, which referenced pre-unification experiments designed to weaponize unstable sugar cores. Cray’s meeting with Rivella marked the beginning of a new phase in the conflict, as the war shifted from territorial battles to the containment of ancient forces that threatened to destabilize the fabric of the Candy Kingdom itself.
Following the reestablishment of contact with Rivella, the Candy Coalition gained access to previously suppressed knowledge concerning the origins and structure of the Sugar Vaults. According to Rivella’s recovered records, the vaults predated the Candy Kingdom itself and were not constructed for storage—but for containment. The artifacts within were identified as remnants of the “Vaultborn,” an extinct class of confectionery constructs developed during the era of the Founding Sugars. These entities were sealed after the Flavorfall, a magical collapse that nearly destabilized the world’s candy essence centuries prior to Orloth's reign.
As Cray and Rivella began decoding the containment sigils, a sudden magical rupture was recorded across multiple regions. Simultaneously, the sky above Peppermint Peaks fractured, revealing a rift of molten sherbet energy. Coalition outposts in the region went dark within minutes. Surveillance devices captured footage of large, autonomous entities composed of unstable sugarglass and corrupted licorice breaching the outer ridgelines. Their forms matched descriptions of Vaultborn constructs—entities long considered myth.
Within hours, the Jawbreakers abandoned several occupied territories without resistance. Initial Coalition analysis interpreted the withdrawal as a strategic realignment, but intercepted transmissions from within the Candy Castle confirmed that King Orloth had lost control of the forces he had released. The Vaultborn had not risen to serve him—they had risen to replace all who remained.
