Wonder Woman: Gods of Dust is a 2027 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. Produced by DC Studios and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe (DCCU). Directed by Jennifer Kent and written by Emerald Fennell, the film stars Ana de Armas as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, with Roman Griffin Davis reprising his role as Damian Wayne / Robin from The Brave and the Bold. The supporting cast includes Shohreh Aghdashloo, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Indira Varma, Tahar Rahim, Rosamund Pike, Kaya Scodelario, and Nicholas Hoult.
The film follows Diana as she emerges from self-imposed exile to investigate a supernatural threat tied to the forgotten Mesopotamian gods. When the underworld goddess Ereshkigal begins reshaping the mortal realm through plagues and divine avatars, Diana must confront ancient secrets buried beneath the desert sands and rekindle her belief in humanity. The film blends epic action with mythological horror and spiritual introspection, establishing a new path forward for the Amazon warrior in the DCCU.
Wonder Woman: Gods of Dust premiered on August 19, 2027, and was released theatrically in the United States on August 26 as part of Chapter One: Crisis. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its darker tone, visual aesthetic, and de Armas's performance. It grossed $841.6 million worldwide on a budget of $220 million.
Plot[edit | edit source]
Centuries ago, the Mesopotamian gods were cast into the underworld after a war with rival deities. Among them was Ereshkigal, the goddess of death and silence, who vowed to one day reclaim the surface world. Her prison—the crypt-city of Eridu—was buried beneath the desert and forgotten by time.
In the present day, an A.R.G.U.S.-sanctioned archaeological dig led by Dr. Alexander Knox and former soldier Ashur uncovers the sealed gates of Eridu in southern Iraq. When Ashur unwittingly activates a ritual chamber, a fracture ripples across the desert, awakening Ereshkigal and unleashing plagues that cause mass disappearances. Sensing the imbalance, Queen Hippolyta's spirit appears in Themyscira’s sacred pool—warning that the old gods are rising.
Elsewhere, Diana Prince lives in solitude within a nomadic village in northern Mongolia, having abandoned her role as Wonder Woman after centuries of disillusionment. She is visited by Damian Wayne, sent by Batman to retrieve a forgotten Amazonian relic—one that now reacts violently to Ereshkigal’s return. Though wary of the world she left behind, Diana agrees to accompany Damian into the desert. As Ereshkigal spreads her influence through plagues and nightmares, her general, the resurrected war god Ninurta, wages destruction across Middle Eastern cities, seeking to weaken humanity’s faith in their institutions. A young mystic named Zahra, possessed by a fragment of Ereshkigal’s essence, becomes the gods’ herald on Earth—speaking in dead tongues and turning human faith into weapons.
Diana, Damian, and Ashur race to stop Ereshkigal from merging the underworld with the mortal realm. Along the way, Diana confronts visions of Queen Hippolyta and past Amazons who question her abandonment of her divine duty. The trio locates Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war, imprisoned in a ruined temple. Disillusioned by her kin’s cruelty, Ishtar hesitantly joins them.
In a final confrontation beneath Eridu, Diana duels Ninurta while Damian disarms the resurrection engine. Ashur sacrifices himself to sever the divine leyline binding the gods to the mortal world, allowing Diana to channel the strength of her Amazonian ancestors. She defeats Ereshkigal by using her lasso to reveal the goddess's true face—one of grief, not vengeance—and casts her back into the underworld.
As the sands settle and the desert returns to silence, Diana reclaims her mantle as Wonder Woman. She entrusts Damian with the ancient Amazonian relic and tells him to remind his father that the old gods may have faded—but not all of them were cruel.
In a mid-credits scene, Ishtar wanders the ruins of Babylon, sensing the stirrings of another godly presence—one that did not fall with the rest. In the post-credits scene, Amanda Waller meets Diana in Themyscira’s ruined temple. She offers her classified intel: the seal that kept the gods buried came from the Phantom Zone—and it is breaking open elsewhere.

Development[edit | edit source]
Wonder Woman: Gods of Dust was announced in October 2025 as the third film in the DC Cinematic Universe, following Superman: Legacy of Tomorrow and The Brave and the Bold. The project was intended to reintroduce Diana Prince / Wonder Woman under a new creative vision. Jennifer Kent was brought on board to direct, while Emerald Fennell was hired to write the screenplay.
The film was conceived as a mythological thriller with horror elements, exploring themes of forgotten history and divine consequence. Fennell described it as “a descent into lost memory and myth, where gods aren't just symbols—they're consequences.”
Filming[edit | edit source]
Principal photography began in June 2026, with filming locations including Wadi Rum in Jordan, Moroccan desert plateaus, and Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom. Visual effects were handled by Framestore and Wētā FX.
